Africa-Press – Namibia. President Nangolo Mbumba recently visited the Mashare Irrigation and Blueberry Project in the Kavango East Region as part of his four-day tour of the Kavango regions to assess green schemes in the area.
The Mashare Irrigation and Blueberry Project is Namibia’s first commercial blueberry farm and features the internationally recognised Mashare Berries Trail. It has created 600 permanent jobs, 3,000 indirect jobs, and up to 7,500 seasonal employment opportunities.
The President highlighted the initiative as a significant effort to enhance Namibia’s self-reliance, combat unemployment, and promote sustainable agriculture, particularly in the face of the ongoing drought. “We should use this drought as a springboard to make sure that we pay attention to our green schemes, put in the necessary funds, and motivate those who are working to ensure they produce,” the President added.
