Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) does not belong to any political party but is solely an association seeking to address challenges faced by councillors.

This is according to ALAN president Katrina Shimbulu, saying that the organization does not deal with political parties’ infights or disagreements. Shimbulu stated that the withdrawal of some political parties’ members is no loss to ALAN and has no effect on the association.

“We have 57 local authority members from all 14 regions, and if a political party wants to remove their people it’s all up to them,” she said, adding that they were not forced to join ALAN.

Shimbulu stated that some of the local authorities hardly pay their membership fee, and political parties saw that the best way to ignore the matter was to remove their people.

Shimbulu, who was voted as president in 2016, was expected to hand over the office keys in 2021. However, the congress was put on hold as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak and subsequent restrictions on gatherings.

The congress is now set for 7 to 9 April 2022 at Oshakati in the Oshana Region, where 300 leaders from all 14 regions will vote for the new ALAN leadership.

“We are still office bearers until the new leadership is voted into the position. We are steering the wheel until April, but officials are on the ground making all the necessary arrangements,” added Shimbulu. She then called on those saying the ALAN leadership is useless, to attend the congress, vote and see how the organization works.
