Africa-Press – Namibia. Residents of Aminius Constituency say they are now forced to transport the remains of dead relatives to Gobabis mortuary, since their mortuary broke down several months back.

Aminius Constituency councillor Peter Kazongominja told The Namibian yesterday that they have been struggling with the situation over the past few months.

“The clinic does not have an ambulance that is always there on standby and if there is one, they are told that the ambulance is not for a corpse,” he said.

He added that families from low income households are left to struggle for transportation to take their deceased to the nearest mortuary in Gobabis about 170km away.

He added that since he has been in the council, this issue has been ongoing for years and there was talk in September last year of resolving it.

Omaheke governor Pijoo Nganate said that he will follow the issue up.

“Last time there were no major issues with the mortuary, it was just some minor issue, which I will follow up, and update the media,” he said.

The mortuary has not been working for about five years.

Earlier this week a daily publication reported that some members are left to keep their deceased at home with them for days.

Some Aminuis community members said that they are emotionally overwhelmed with the fact that they have to keep their deceased at home with them.
