Africa-Press – Namibia. Modestus Amutse has been appointed as the new Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, taking the reins at a crucial moment for the country’s economic transformation.

The move, announced by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah yesterday, comes as Namibia pushes to strengthen its mining sector. “Amutse assumes this critical role at a time when Namibia is accelerating industrialisation, strengthening the mining sector, and expanding energy development,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said in the press statement shared by Press Secretary Jonas Mbambo.

The statement continued. “I wish him every success in implementing these national priorities and ensuring sustainable development and shared prosperity for all Namibians.”

According to the Presidency, Amutse brings extensive experience in public service, having served as Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, a Member of Parliament, and chairperson of a National Assembly Standing Committee on ICT.

His earlier leadership at the regional level as a regional councillor adds to the depth of expertise he now brings to the ministry.

The Presidency notes that Amutse takes office at a time when the country is implementing key strategies outlined in the Swapo Party election manifesto and the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).

The government has emphasised that energy security, industrial growth, and responsible mining are central to job creation and improving living standards nationwide.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah also thanked Frans Kapofi, Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, for providing steady leadership while serving in an acting capacity over the past months. With Amutse at the helm, the ministry is expected to maintain momentum on major projects and policies, especially those supporting renewable energy, industrial expansion, and sustainable mining practices.

Amutse’s appointment came after Nandi-Ndaitwah dismissed Natangwe Ithete from his positions as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, with immediate effect in October.

To ensure stability and effective coordination within the key economic sector, the President had personally assumed responsibility for the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, effective immediately and later appointed Kapofi as interim minister.

The Presidency reaffirms its commitment to sound governance, accountability and the effective implementation of national priorities in pursuit of Namibia’s shared vision of sustainable and inclusive development.
