Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Joe Biden of the United States, currently on a three-day visit to Angola, emphasized the need for collaboration to enable Africa to play a leading role in global affairs.
He made these remarks during the Multilateral Lobito Corridor Summit held in the port city of Lobito, Benguela Province on Wednesday.
The summit was presided over by Angolan President João Lourenço and attended by Presidents Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, and Tanzanian Vice President Phillip Mpango.
Lourenço highlighted that the Lobito Corridor would serve as a crucial tool to enhance trade within Africa and beyond.
Hichilema described the Lobito Corridor as a significant opportunity for the global economy, while Tshisekedi referred to it as a strategic route that adds value to the natural resources of Angola, the DRC, Zambia, and other regions.
Meanwhile, President Lourenço said that Angola, like all nations, seeks strong relations with the United States, which he described as the world’s most powerful nation.
In an interview with The New York Times, Lourenço said Angola’s long-standing aspiration to maintain good relations with the U.S., dates back to the Cold War era. He remarked that Angola’s diplomatic efforts eventually bore fruit, culminating in the signing of the New York Accords in 1988, which paved the way for Namibia’s independence and the end of apartheid in South Africa.
