Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) only has enough blood for two days.
It will run out of stock if no significant blood donations are made immediately. NamBTS spokesperson Titus Shivute says the blood bank needs 2 000 people to donate blood before the end of the year.
He says blood is needed to ensure that lives are saved, because currently patients are not receiving the units of blood they require. “Patients will be getting the minimum units of blood as instructed by doctors until the blood bank has made more collections for the daily required units of patients,” he says.
The situation is dire, Shivute says. The blood bank is unable to currently refill its because all blood units received are immediately issued to hospitals.
Shivute says there has been a significant upturn in the usage of blood in hospitals over the past two months, and the bank has not been able to meet the demands of patients requiring blood.
“Some 150 units are needed daily, meaning 150 people are needed for blood donations every day of the week to ensure we are able to meet the demand,” he says.
