Africa-Press – Namibia. BLUE Waters went to the top of the Debmarine Namibia Premiership for the first time this season after picking up maximum points with two home wins over the weekend.
On Saturday they beat Black Africa 1-0 through a first half goal by their attacking midfielder Lazarus ‘Gattuso’ Andjengo, while they beat Young African 2-1 on Sunday through first half goals by Erastus Kulula and Israel Shikongo.
The results put them at the top of the log on 11 points from five matches – just ahead of Julinho Sporting, African Stars and Okahandja United, who are all a point behind.
Blue Waters manager Robert Shimooshili said they had big plans this season.
“We are working hard to make sure that we reach the top and win the league – that is our short term objective, while our long term objective is to maintain the harmony, peace and stability and to continue to grow the club,” he said.
“Some of our players are getting a bit old now like Hendrik Somaeb, Gregory Auchumeb and Festus Nghindinwa, but our development structures are in place and we’ve got some exciting youngsters that are coming up, like Tuhafeni David, Lazarus Andjengo, Lesley Kukuweb and Sammy Ndahangwapo,” he added.
“We obviously miss players like Aprocius Petrius and Prins Tjiueza who are now playing in Kosovo, but we have enough depth and talent and our aim is to win the league this season,” he added.
Julinho Sporting, meanwhile, continued their fine start when they collected four points in Windhoek after beating Citizens 4-1 on Saturday and drawing 2-2 to Civics on Sunday.
On Saturday, Julinho took an early 2-0 lead after goals by Trimalo Kufanga and Almeida Francisco, but Citizens opened their account through to make the halftime score 2-1.
Julinho, however, upped the tempo after the break and a brace by Reinhold Shavuka gave them a commanding victory.
On Sunday, Francisco pounced onto a poor clearance to give them an early lead against Civics, but the Civilians struck back with two goals in two minutes by Vitapi Ngaruka and Giovano Kaninab.
Julinho, however, struck back just before halftime when Shavuka beat the offside trap to equalise from close range.
After an uneventful second half with few chances, the two sides hung on for the draw, which maintains Julinho’s unbeaten run, although their coach Nelson Luis said it was too early to talk about being a title challenger.
“It’s too early to say, we don’t want to look too far ahead, we will just take it game for game now. But we are happy with our progress, and I think it’s about time that our football gets noticed. We are proud to say that we are featuring 80 percent Kavango and Caprivi players and the players are fighting to show that their region is worth something,” he said.
African Stars also had a successful weekend with two away victories, after beating Okahandja United 2-0 on Saturday and Mighty Gunners by the same score on Sunday.
Against Okahandja, Dynamo Fredericks opened their account midway through the first half, while sustained pressure led to an Okahandja own goal in the second half.
At Otjiwarongo on Sunday, Charles Hambira gave them the lead when he headed in from a corner, while winger Manase Salazar made it 2-0 after the break.
Stars’ manager Mervin Mbakera said he was happy with their progress.
“We are on track – we have picked up 10 points out of a possible 12 and only dropped two points so far. If you look at our game stats of the weekend, we created many more chances and shots on target than in our previous matches, and we are now on track of reaching our target of winning the league,” he said.
The results of other matches over the weekend were as follows:
Saturday, 26 November:
Eleven Arrows 1-1 Young African, Mighty Gunners 2-0 Young Brazilians, Unam 0-0 Orlando Pirates, Civics 2-0 Life Fighters, Tura Magic 2-1 Tigers.
