Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Capricorn Foundation continues to support strengthening early childhood development (ECD) in the country’s informal settlements.

This according to Capricorn Group spokesperson Marlize Horn in a media statement on Wednesday.

The Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) has contributed N$400 000 towards good quality early childhood education and learning opportunities.

“The sponsorship will be channelled towards the 24 ECD centres that DWN supports at Opuwo and Katima Mulilo.

“The project will have a duration of 12 months and will benefit some 636 children who are enrolled in these ECD centres, as well as 52 teachers,” Horn said.

The foundation-funded ECD project will comprise three intervention areas: teaching and learning materials, teacher training at all project towns, and ECD centre physical improvements, she said.

These activities are implemented in close collaboration with local authorities and the ministries of gender and education, and all project results are a direct contribution to the objectives of the second Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPPII), she said.

Hilma Weber, ECD programme manager of DWN, said: “ECD is one of the key pillars of the HPPII, seeking to address the long-term effects that result from unequal opportunities for young children.

“This important document for guiding development activities explicitly names DWN as a partner of the government for urban development.

“This strong relationship allows DWN to collaborate with government institutions to best support the provision of quality and integrated ECD throughout Namibia, and we are proud that the Capricorn Foundation has once again committed to invest in our initiatives.”
