Africa-Press – Namibia. THE City of Windhoek on Thursday welcomed new junior mayors for 2021/22.
Speaking at the inauguration, Windhoek mayor Job Amupanda advised the new junior councillors not to end their political journey at junior level, but to strive to be future senior councillors.
“We don’t expect you to be ceremonial, we expect you to be substantive junior councillors,” Amupanda said.
Lesley Shetukana from Dawid Bezuidenhoudt Secondary School has been elected as new junior mayor and is deputised by Ngeje Kavita from Chairman Mao Zedong High School.
Shetukana said his mission as junior mayor is to create a child-friendly environment by keeping children in schools and raising awareness of boys’ mental health.
There are 80 junior councillors in total, with 40 councillors in Grade 11 and 40 understudies in Grade 10. The group also comprises two visually and hearing-impaired councillors.
