Africa-Press – Namibia. THE chairperson of Omundaungilo Community Forest, Titus Nghipewa, has asked the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to consider paying members of conservancies and community forests.

He said although they look after forests on behalf of the ministry, they work on voluntary basis.

Nghipewa was speaking at a conservancies and community forests chairperson forum held at Ondangwa on Friday.

He said volunteering should come to an end.

Meanwhile, Okongo Conservancy chairperson Martha Nghidengwa proposed that the environment ministry gives them money instead of paying for their accommodation when they attend conferences.

“We work on a voluntary basis. We hear lodges are expensive. Why can’t the ministry give us the money it uses in paying for our accommodation when we attend conferences so that we can support our families?” Nghidengwa asked.

Director of wildlife and national parks Bennett Kahuure said the ministry will look into the matter.
