Correctional service distances itself from SMS scam

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) has distanced itself from an SMS sent to some short-listed candidates from its current recruitment drive.

An SMS has been sent to a number of shortlisted candidates in which the author, a certain Ndahafa Hendrick, claims to be from NSC and has the general questions paper for the interview at a fee.

The SMS comes from cellphone number 0814134247 and reads: “Good morning, its Mrs Hendrick Ndahafa from Namibia Correctional Service in Windhoek, hereby to inform you that the aptitude test and fitness test is on 18-19 January if you from 18-25 years and if you above 26 years the date is 20-21 January, I have a general question paper that will come to interview selling for N$190 and if you happen to fail an interview talk to me too, I have a way Ref: HNdahafa HR department.” [sic]

Hendrick is suspected to have obtained the contact numbers from the list of shortlisted candidates that was distributed publicly last week.

She did not answer her phone or respond to messages sent to her.

The head of the directorate central staff, commissioner Michael Mulisa, confirmed that the NCS has no staff member by such a name.

“It is a total scam,” he said.

He urged anyone who has been approached by Hendrick to immediately report it to the police.

Mulisa added that the NCS does not share question papers, which are set by a committee of experts in the field on the day the test and interview are conducted.

“Only candidates who will pass the physical test will sit for the written test and only those who will pass the written test will be invited for the oral interview. Hence, the question paper(s) for the assessment tests are not available,” he said.

He further explained that the candidates’ contact details were made public so that the shortlisted candidates confirm the correctness of their cellphone numbers when reporting for the physical test to enable the department to reach the successful candidates without difficulties.

“Also for easy identification purposes. On 5 January 2023, the Namibian Correctional Service issued a public notice, cautioning the public not to make any monetary payment to any person claiming to assist in securing employment in the NCS. The notice was widely circulated/communicated and I believe all candidates are aware of this,” he said.

Mulisa encouraged candidates in need of reading/resource materials in preparation for the assessment tests or for further information to contact commissioner Johannes Muyemburuko or deputy commissioner Mary Nfwambi at the Directorate Human Resource Management at telephone number 061 2846111, or visit the nearest correctional institution.
