Africa-Press – Namibia. COMMISSIONER-GENERAL of the Namibian Correctional Service, Raphael Tuhafeni Hamunyela, has warned the 95 trainee graduates of NCS that any lack of discipline in the force will not be tolerated.

Hamunyela made the remarks during the 8th Basic Orientation Training Course, Intake 1/2024, graduation ceremony on Wednesday.

According to Hamunyela, it is crucial for the graduates to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in their roles.

“I would also like to urge the families of those working for the NCS to reach out to us if they notice any concerning behaviour or lack of care towards their loved ones,” he said.

He added that they are here to support both their correctional staff and their families, and it is essential that they work together to ensure the well-being of all involved.

Further, Hamunyela indicated that the Namibian Correctional Service has two mandatory training courses for new correctional officers: the Basic Correctional Training Course, a nine-month intensive and strenuous training for recruits, and the Basic Orientation Training Course, a three-month intensive training for specialized correctional officers.

“The two trainings are designed to prepare correctional officers for their role by providing a clear understanding of the purpose of correctional work,” he said.

He said that these trainings include both theoretical and practical training and assessment.

In April, a total of 95 trainees, comprising 40 males and 55 females from educational backgrounds such as psychology, social work, nursing, theology, education, agriculture, hospitality, sports, administration, and security, reported for Basic Orientation Training intake 1/2024.

Hamunyela said the training completed a total of 13 modules, physical activities, and practical activities within a period of three months.

Out of the 13 modules undertaken, only 10 were for examination purposes, while the other three were not examinable. All 95 trainees successfully completed the training.
