D-Day as Moses //Garoëb residents vote in by-election

Africa-Press – Namibia. RESIDENTS of Windhoek’s Moses //Garoëb constituency are heading to the polls today to elect a new constituency councillor.

The constituency’s by-election follows the death of former constituency councillor Aili Venonya in October last year.

Returning officer for the Moses //Garoëb constituency by-elections Rakondjerua Kavari yesterday said all relevant officials have been deployed to the 25 polling stations.

“Preparations have been going well since October,” he said.

Kavari said all police officers and party agents have also been deployed and are ready for the elections.

Polling officials received training from 14 to 18 December, and a refresher course was scheduled for 3 and 4 January.

Party agents and police officers were also trained on 12 and 13 December.

“They are now acquainted with the electoral process and understand their roles as observers, party agents, and as law-enforcement agents,” Kavari said.

He said the election agents from different parties and those representing independent candidates have handed in all required documentation and are ready for the day.

Kavari said party agents will observe and validate the pre-poll procedures to ensure their candidates receive fair treatment during the elections.

“We expect free and fair elections in the Moses //Garoëb constituency because all procedures of the Electoral Act have been enforced and we don’t foresee any hiccups. We are looking forward to a good and peaceful election,” he said.

Two independent candidates, Moses Hengobe and Hashoongo Ndalifilwa, are contesting for the position against Mwandingi Moses of the Independent Patriots for Change, Nakale Shinime of the Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters, and Ndengu Stefanus of Swapo.

The Moses //Garoëb constituency comprises 45 000 residents.

Polling stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00 and the results will be announced at the collation centre at the Moses //Garoëb Primary School hall.
