Africa-Press – Namibia. The minister of defence and veteran affairs, Frans Kapofi, on Wednesday said cash payments to veterans have brought a positive change in their lives.

In December 2021, cabinet resolved to convert payments for individual veterans’ projects to cash payments capped at N$170 000.

Since the commencement of the cash payment, Kapofi, who was motivating the veteran affairs budget in parliament, said the ministry has paid 559 veterans.

“The cash payment has brought about a positive change in the lives of the beneficiaries, as some have used the money to renovate their dwellings,” he said.

The minister explained that one of the biggest challenges the ministry faces is the payment of the individual veterans’ projects that started in 2011.

Although the ministry has already paid out 11 035 individual veteran projects, Kapofi said there is still a sizeable backlog of 11 125 unfunded projects.

He said the ministry would keep using the resources at its disposal to improve the socio-economic status of veterans and those waiting to be recognised by the Veterans Board and Veterans Appeal Board.

Kapofi appealed to the members of parliament to support and approve the N$1,17 billion budget for veterans affairs for the 2023-24 financial year.
