Africa-Press – Namibia. Fuel prices in Namibia will go up from 1 April, following a sharp rise in global oil prices.

Energy minister Modestus Amutse announced this on Friday, saying petrol will go up by N$2.50 per litre, while both diesel grades will increase by N$4 per litre.

“At Walvis Bay, petrol will now cost N$22.08 per litre, while diesel will be sold at over N$23 per litre,” he said.

Amutse said the increase comes as international oil prices surged in March. Petrol prices rose by nearly 57%, while diesel prices more than doubled.

This was mainly caused by tensions in the Middle East, involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which raised fears of supply disruptions, he said.

The situation was made worse by higher transport and insurance costs, as well as the weakening of the Namibia dollar against the United States dollar.

“As a result, Namibia is paying more to import fuel,” he said.

Amutse said the country’s annual fuel consumption stands at 1.1 billion litres, of which 70% is diesel, while 30% is fuel.

“It equates to about 100 million litres of petrol and diesel consumed monthly,” he said.

The minister said the country recorded large under-recoveries during the review period, meaning the actual fuel cost was much higher than what consumers were paying.

To reduce the impact, Amutse said the Cabinet approved a 50% three-month cut in fuel levies from April to June 2026.

He said the government will also cover about N$500 million through the National Energy Fund to avoid passing the full cost on to consumers.

Amutse said Namibia depends fully on imported fuel, making it vulnerable to global price changes.

The ministry will continue to monitor the situation and take steps to protect consumers where possible, h
