Africa-Press – Namibia. RECENTLY elected Dolphins Rugby Club chairperson Rowhan Besser says his mission is to help the side reclaim their glory days.

The Swakopmund team was established in 1980 but has endured a series of misfortunes over the years, culminating in a shut down in 2019.

Speaking to Desert Radio recently, Besser conceded that reviving the club is not going to be easy, but it’s a challenge he and his management are determined to take on.

Besser said he was initially hesitant to embrace the new responsibility but after an inspirational chat with his wife, his determination to grab the reins and steer the Dolphins towards prosperity was renewed.

“Our mandate is to restore rugby, starting from primary school level because the kids are the future of our country, and that has not been a priority as others only look at the present and not the future,” Besser said.

“Erongo is endowed with huge talent and those are the talents we truly want to nourish and groom.

“I have big plans and a practical vision for the Dolphins Rugby Club.”

Besser said the club is looking at broadening its appeal by incorporating football, netball, hockey, volleyball and pool.

“If you look at Wanderers, it’s an established sport club and I am asking myself why can we not emulate their structures,” Besser noted.

“I believe in dreaming big and by doing just that, one has to go out and simply accomplish your ideals.”

Dolphins have established a commercial unit spearheaded by business owners who will engage potential sponsors to ensure the team generates funds and secures investors.

“I’m glad they have taken on that role so that I and my team can solely focus on the development of the team,” said Besser.

However, part of upscaling involves fixed remuneration of players so that they are able to sustain livelihoods.

“Though sport brings joy and unity, most players are unemployed and, thus management has to consider their well-being,” Besser stressed.

Additionally, the establishment of a sport field for the club, primary schools rugby leagues for both girls and boys, and having Dolphin Rugby Club competing in the NRU Premier Division complete the to do list.
