Africa-Press – Namibia. DURING the holiday most people take a break, the coronavirus remains relentless.
In the latest briefing on the Covid-19 situation, the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced 1 053 new positive cases from 3 156 results in the last 24-hour reporting cycle, representing a 33.4% positivity ratio.
The ages range from a two-month-old to an 86-year-old.
Of the new cases, 828 accounting for 77% are unvaccinated.
Khomas reported the highest number, 295, making up 28%, followed by Erongo with 179, constituting 17% of all newly confirmed cases.
Six Covid-19 deaths, including two home deaths from the Engela district, and one Covid-19 related death were reported. Six deaths occurred between 19 and 22 December, and one on 24 December. None of the deceased were vaccinated.
According to health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula, 80 new re-infections were reported, with Khomas the highest, namely 39, making up 48.8% of all re-infections.
Among the confirmed cases are 91 learners, 16 teachers, 16 students and 43 healthcare workers from different institutions.
Fifteen cases have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, 176 cases are fully vaccinated, two cases received three doses, while 32 vaccinated cases did not specify the number of doses received.
“We are reporting 384 new recoveries from seven regions,” Dr Shangula said.
“The number of active cases is now 13 800. Hospitalized cases are currently at 320 across all 14 regions, of which 23 are in Intensive Care Units (ICUs).”
Eight of the hospitalized cases have received one dose of the vaccine and 41 are fully vaccinated. Two cases in ICU are fully vaccinated, while 21 cases in ICU are unvaccinated.
By 23 December, a total of 403 260 people have received one dose of the vaccine, representing 26.8% of the target population, including 1 689 children aged 12 to 17 years.
A total of 104 242 have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is administered as one dose, while 237 149 adults had received two doses of other vaccines. Therefore, 341 391 have completed the vaccination, translating to 22.7% of the target population.
So far, 4 290 people have received a booster dose.
