Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Hage Geingob says the death of former Angolan president José Eduardo dos Santos is a tragic loss for Angola, Namibia and Africa as a whole.

Dos Santos, who served as Angolan president from 1979 to 2017, died in Spain on Friday.

Dos Santos (79) was hospitalised in Barcelona since June, five years after he had left office in May 2017.

“President Dos Santos was an outstanding revolutionary, a tenacious freedom fighter and a staunch Pan Africanist, who dedicated his life to the pursuit of freedom, justice and equality for the peoples of Angola, southern Africa and Africa at large,” Geingob said in a statement released on Friday.

The president added that Dos Santos would be remembered for his immense contribution to the liberation of Namibia.

He added that Namibia owed a great debt of gratitude to Dos Santos and the people of Angola.

“Indeed, there is no doubt that his legacy will remain immortalised in the hearts and minds of current and successive generations of Namibians to come,” Geingob said.

He added that he would remember Dos Santos as a dear friend with whom he had a great working relationship.
