Africa-Press – Namibia. The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) says during the first week of the supplementary registration of voters, the commission has registered a total of 19 359 eligible voters in 121 constituencies and 59 local authorities countrywide.
In addition, 12 270 voters moved from one constituency to another, and 4 1181 registered voters applied for duplicate voter registration cards.
ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka announced this on Thursday.
“While appreciating and commending all eligible voters who made efforts to register during the first week of the supplementary registration of voters, the commission noted with great concern the low turnout recorded,” he said.
He urged all eligible voters to use the opportunity to register – especially young voters who turned 18 since the conclusion of the 2024 general registration of voters and those whose voter cards are marked as ‘not applicable’ but who have been living in the same local authority areas since 2 August last year.
Siluka urged eligible voters who relocated to a different constituency or missed the chance to register last year to do so.
Supplementary registration commenced on 4 August and will run until 19 August.
To be eligible for registration, Siluka said individuals must be Namibian citizens, at least 18 years old, and able to identify themselves. Additionally, eligible voters must apply for registration in the constituency and local authority where they live.
Voters are required to demonstrate that they have lived in a local authority area for a period of 12 consecutive months, he said.
Such proof, Siluka said, can be provided by either presenting a water and electricity bill, telephone account, or a declaration under oath taken by registration officials.
