THE Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has announced its plan to hire more than 5,000 privately owned vehicles for use during the upcoming Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections scheduled for 26 November.
The highest number of vehicles — 716 in total — are needed in the Ohangwena Region, followed by Omusati and Oshikoto with 689 and 520 respectively.
The number of vehicles the ECN intends to hire in the other eleven regions is as follows: Hardap (174), Khomas (276), Omaheke (277), Otjozondjupa (326), Kavango West (327), Kavango East (329), Erongo (230), Oshana (330), //Karas (239), Kunene (351), and Zambezi (389).
The ECN typically provides vehicle hire rates for different categories of vehicles, depending on the type of vehicle and the duration of its use.
Requirements include that the vehicle must not be older than 10 years, must be a single or double cab 2×4 or 4×4 with a canopy, roadworthy, and with no stickers, slogans, or colours bearing messages of political parties, religious, or business institutions.
According to the ECN, vehicle inspections and roadworthy testing will take place in the respective regions from 27 to 31 October.
The hiring of vehicles and other equipment is one of the economic spin-offs of the elections.
