Eenhana town council tables N$88m budget

Africa-Press – Namibia. ALTHOUGH the residents of Eenhana have proposed various development projects to be incorporated in the budget, not all will be realised this year.

Eenhana mayor Omri-Onn Kavandje, who was tabling the income and expenditure budget for 2022/2023 at the town on Monday, warned that council will address proposed projects one at a time, as taking them all on would place the council in financial jeopardy.

The town council has tabled its provisional budget of N$88,8 million for the 2022/2023 financial year, an 18% increase from 2021.

In the provisional budget, council allocated 71% to operational costs and 29% to capital projects.

Kavandje said the increase was necessitated by the improvement of housing delivery, which has a direct impact on the council’s revenue stream.

“This year’s budget is crafted to address pressing needs of our community, yet in line with the requirements of the local authorities.”

Kavandje urged residents to continue honouring their lawful obligations by paying their municipal accounts on time.

“The sources of our revenue are payments from the town’s residents for services rendered. This money has to be reinvested in the town’s development. Failure to pay for services will put council in a very difficult situation, which might have a direct negative impact on the socio-economic development of the town.”

Kavandje said council’s operational expenditure will continue to take the bigger portion of the budget.

“This cost is necessitated by an increase on maintenance of both water supply systems and sewerage reticulation systems at the town. The current fuel prices are also starting to contribute to these costs. However, it is unfortunate that we cannot stop working or simply park our vehicles due to the escalation of these costs, otherwise services will not be rendered to our residents as expected,” said Kavandje.
