Africa-Press – Namibia. Erongo RED has launched a new mobile application and made major progress in bringing electricity to the community in the Erongo region.

The app, introduced in Walvis Bay this week, allows customers to buy prepaid electricity, pay bills, check balances, report faults, track usage, receive outage updates, and request advanced units.

It was developed in partnership with Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC), BCX Namibia, Syntell and DPO Pay.

Erongo RED chief executive officer Immanuel !Hanabeb said the new platform reflects the company’s effort to bring innovation closer to consumers and improve service delivery.

“The launch of the mobile application is a testament to our commitment to bringing innovation closer to our consumers and transforming the way we connect and serve,” said !Hanabeb.

He said the idea for the app took shape during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Then came 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic, a turning point that changed how we operate. With safety concerns on both sides, the need for a digital solution became urgent. It was during this time that the vision of a mobile app resurfaced, stronger and more relevant than ever,” he said.

MTC’s manager for digital transformation, Nawa Likando, said the partnership supports Namibia’s digital growth.

“As Namibia embraces the Fourth Industrial Revolution, partnerships like the one between MTC and Erongo RED will continue to be vital,” he said. “Together, we’re not just digitising services; we’re laying the groundwork for a smarter, more connected nation.”

At the same time, Erongo RED is continuing its large-scale electrification project in the DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund. The N$11.46 million project, largely funded by a N$10 million government contribution, aims to connect 650 homes free of charge.

Following a site handover on 6 October, contractors Electro Wave Investment CC and NBT Quality Services CC are installing underground cables and service connections.

So far, 197 homes have been powered. An additional 300 houses will be connected by 31 March 2026.

Erongo RED said both initiatives show its commitment to improving access to safe, reliable, and modern electricity services across the region.
