Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform has received nine vehicles from the European Union (EU) aimed at strengthening livestock value chains in Namibia’s Northern Communal Areas (NCAs).

The vehicles include eight Land Cruisers — two of which have been converted into mobile veterinary clinics — as well as one truck. EU Ambassador Ana Beatriz Martins revealed that the vehicles are valued at N$10 million.

The handover forms part of the EU-funded Livestock Support Programme and aims to enhance animal health monitoring, support efforts to combat Foot and Mouth Disease, strengthen livestock traceability, and improve compliance with export requirements, particularly in Namibia’s NCAs.

“The eight Land Cruisers and one Hino truck are specifically intended for livestock transport. They are equipped with trailers and designed for safety and durability to withstand Namibia’s rugged terrain. Each vehicle is marked with a unique registration number to ensure traceability and clear identification as an asset of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform,” Martins said.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ruthy Masake, emphasised that communal farmers — particularly small-scale producers, women and young people — are at the heart of the programme.

“This initiative is not just about vehicles or infrastructure. It is about people — farmers, families and communities — and about strengthening their ability to participate meaningfully in Namibia’s economy,” Masake said.

The Minister noted that the programme will enable veterinary officers to access remote villages more efficiently and ensure that farmers can obtain essential services, including assistance with transporting livestock to markets.

“The Livestock Support Programme demonstrates the power of strategic partnership and focused investment. Through infrastructure, logistics, disease control and skills development, we are building a stronger and more competitive beef value chain in the Northern Communal Areas. On behalf of the Government and the people of Namibia, I therefore express our sincere gratitude to the European Union for its continued support,” Masake added.
