Africa-Press – Namibia. Ohangwena education director Isak Hamatwi has called on staff members entrusted with supervisory roles to exercise their authority with empathy, humility and emotional intelligence.

Speaking at the new year kick-off and team building gathering held in Eenhana last week, he noted that a healthy work environment is not built on fear, but on mutual respect, fairness and understanding.

He stressed that authority is given to guide, support and enable performance, but not to intimidate, frustrate or make anyone’s work life difficult.

“No supervisor should aim to make the workplace uncomfortable or miserable for others. At the same time, those who are supervised also carry responsibility. Supervisors do not create authority for themselves. It is entrusted to them by the system to ensure order, direction and accountability,” he said.

Hamatwi urged staff members to resolve disagreements professionally and through the right channels, rather than with anger.

“Where there is disagreement or dissatisfaction, let it be expressed through professional channels and respectful engagement. Professionalism must always be our first response. Let us guard ourselves against emotional reactions. A moment of uncontrolled emotion can damage reputations and careers,” said Hamatwi.

He called for teamwork and urged staff members to sustain and strengthen existing initiatives that are yielding positive results, while also developing new strategies and innovative approaches to improve the region’s performance.

“The learners’ performance in the classroom is the final product of our collective efforts. Therefore, we shall rise together. We must think, plan and act together,” said Hamatwi.
