Fire destroys four shacks at Swakopmund

Africa-Press – Namibia. Four families lost their homes in two separate fires at the Democratic Resettlement Community ( DRC) settlement at Swakopmund on Saturday night.

Erongo police regional unit commander for community affairs, inspector Ileni Shapumba said that the cause of both fires are still unknown, and under investigation.

There were no deaths or injuries reportrd in both fires.

The first fire occured between 19h00 and 20h00, where a woman was cooking outside her shack. She left to ask for salt from her neighbours, and found her shack on fire.

The fire alledgedly started from inside the shack. The woman said that there was no candle burning in the shack.

The second fire occured between 21h00 and 22h00, where three shacks were destroyed in one yard.

The fires were put out by the Swakopmund fire brigade team.

“We are appealing to community members to be watchful of anything that might cause fires around their houses. We are also asking for anyone with information on the two incidences to contact the police.” said Shapumba.
