SPRINT legend Frank Fredericks on Monday pledged to erect a multipurpose sport facility in Windhoek. This follows earlier announcements that similar structures would be constructed at Outjo and Okahao.

Like Windhoek, the two towns have streets named in recognition of Fredericks’ legendary accomplishments.

On Friday, Namibia’s most-decorated athlete committed N$1,2 million through the Frank Fredericks Foundation towards the development of the Okahao Sport Stadium.

Pupils at Okahao also received N$100 000 in scholarships from the foundation.

Fredericks said it was his way of giving back to the community, and for the love and passion of sport.

“As one of the three towns with streets named after me, I would like to give back to the community, and I need guidance in terms of sport facility needs in the city,” he said when making his latest pledge during a visit to the office of Windhoek mayor Sade Gawanas.

The retired athletics star said he is investing in sport infrastructure because that is what enabled him to make a success of his life.

“Growing up, I had a sport field near my house at Katutura, where we used to play after school, and that’s what changed my life,” he said.

The two-time Olympic medallist said the sport facilities are part of his long-term plan to improve sport in the country and to produce more world champions.

Fredericks budgeted N$1 million for the Windhoek initiative.

He revealed plans to introduce a 60m track challenge in the country, particularly at Outjo, Okahao and Windhoek.

Gawanas welcomed the idea, saying the city will fast track the process of identifying land to set up the sport facility in line with the Windhoek town planning scheme, especially in areas with no existing sport facilities.
