THE Namibian Police (NamPol) are fighting an uphill battle against fuel smugglers on the Namibia-Angola border.

According to NamPol’s Andrew Nghiyolwa, the law enforcement officers continue to curb cross-border crime, including the smuggling of fuel and contraband cigarettes and liquor.

He said that smugglers are ever coming up with new ways of evading the police, but the police are a step ahead of them.

“They keep coming up with new evasion tactics, but we are hunting them down relentlessly and have arrested many. They will have nowhere to hide,” he said.

The smuggling of fuel from Angola has increased in recent months, dealing a near-fatal blow to the local fuel industry as motorists migrate to the black market.
