Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA are not part of the 2022 Zone Six Club Volleyball Championship underway in Lusaka, Zambia, due to a scarcity of finances.
Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) technical director Joseph Amakali says both the women’s and men’s volleyball clubs had to withdraw their participation because of poor funding.
“Registration alone was US$900, which is equivalent to N$15 534, and that is too costly for the clubs,” he says.
“We found out that it is not only clubs from Namibia who withdrew, but even clubs from the host nation and other countries are not taking part.”
The NVF has since shifted the focus to its talent identification and development drive, with a national training and development programme set for Windhoek this weekend.
The camp is aimed at establishing national teams to compete in the 2023 Zone Six Championships and qualifiers for the All Africa Games.
“We have submitted a request to the international volleyball body to have the FIVB coach and instructor, Shailen Ramdoo, back in Namibia next year,” Amakali says.
In the interim, Ramdoo, who is on a three-month mission to Namibia, is conducting national team beach volleyball tryouts and training, which began on Tuesday and will conclude today at the DTS sport grounds in Windhoek.
“The aim is to identify the potential national team volleyball players in the country as part of the volleyball restructuring project,” Amakali says.
