PRESIDENT Hage Geingob said that the struggle for the economic emancipation for all Namibians is challenging, but he believes that the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) is able to overcome this challenge and deliver shared economic prosperity, given the party’s intellectual and physical capacity.

The president made these remarks on Friday at the opening ceremony of the Third SWAPO Party Policy Conference, which took place under the theme “Strengthening the SWAPO party for a united congress 2022”.

Geingob explained that the overall agenda of the conference is guided by the party’s need to deliver tangible outcomes by setting benchmarks for advancing governance and socio-economic architecture.

“We prepare to embark on yet another crucial and historic exercise, as we continue traversing our path towards ultimate success in the Second Phase of our struggle, the Economic Emancipation of all Namibians,” he said.

Geingob also noted that governing the country has not been easy, especially because the SWAPO party governed the country during two global crises, namely the financial crisis and the Covid-19 health crisis. Still, he said, the party has achieved a significant amount of success – which, according to him, was not due to good fortune or chance, but due to the party’s ability to engage in thoughtful dialogue, meticulous planning and concrete action.

This success, he said, also means that the responsibilities and expectations placed on the party have become greater. He therefore stressed that it is imperative for the party to engage in regular discussions with regards to policy as the policy environment is not stagnant, but ever-changing. In this regard, he said that the party’s agenda must be guided by the reality of today and the anticipated future.

“I have previously emphasised that as a party and as a government, we need to shift into a new gear for change. Our people expect positive socio-economic change and we must be at the forefront to lead that change,” he said.

Geingob also mentioned that the SWAPO party’s fight is now against poverty, unemployment, inequality and inequity. He added that a number of international engagements have already been undertaken to address unemployment, while promoting investment and sustainable economic growth for the country. These activities, he explained, are related to the Green Hydrogen, oil, agricultural land and water sectors.
