Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Hage Geingob says as Namibia commemorates Cassinga Day on Wednesday, the day will forever be a scar in the memory of many.
This day is observed in memory of the hundreds of Namibian refugees and freedom fighters, who died in an attack by the colonial troops of apartheid South Africa at Cassinga in southern Angola.
Geingob said 44 years after the massacre of Namibian refugees, mainly women and children, on 4 May 1978, Namibia still remembers that painful chapter because the physical and psychological scars are deep. They remain a constant reminder that the freedom and independence of the Namibian people came at a high cost.
“On this solemn day, we pause to remember our compatriots who lost their precious lives on that fateful day, 4 May 1978, on which horrific acts of violence and brutality were committed against the Namibian people. We will remember forever,” the president added.
Geingob further said Namibians also pay homage to the survivors of the Cassinga massacre, whose lives remain traumatised.
The president added the most befitting manner to honour the memory of Cassinga Day and the sacrifices of the heroes and heroines is by working hard, in unity, “towards the realisation of a better Namibia, guided by the principles of social justice, solidarity and the improvement of the standards of living of all our people”.
