Africa-Press – Namibia. ON the 12th of April 2023, the official inauguration of the additional hostel buildings on the UNAM José Eduardo dos Santos (JEDS) Campus in Ongwediva took place.
The inauguration was officiated by the Hon. Dr. Itah Kandji-Murangi, Minister of Higher Education, Training and Innovation and witnessed by Hon. Elia Irimari, Governor of Oshana Region and the Vice Chancellor of UNAM, Prof. Kenneth Matengu.
The hostel buildings form part of the joint German-Namibian project to extend the capacities of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on the Campus in Ongwediva.
Former activities included the construction of the German Wing, the Department’s teaching facilities including workshops and laboratories. Funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, German Development Cooperation contributed a total of 13 Million Euros for the construction works through its Development Bank KfW. The Namibian Government contributed 7.5 million Euros to the project.
The new facilities erected through the cooperation will substantially improve and increase the qualification and number of Namibian civil engineers. These skills are urgently needed to fulfil the economic enhancement of the country, especially in new technological fields. Furthermore, the project will help to reduce regional disparities within Namibia between the central Windhoek region and the Northern regions of the country, while at the same time promoting integration in the SADC region.
In order to achieve these goals, enabling infrastructure is needed. This encompasses a facility such as the German Wing as well as social infrastructure like hostels and leisure facilities. With this achievement, UNAM has a very attractive state-of-the-art facility for the region, with teaching environment, laboratories and now also accommodation facilities for students.
Currently, German Development Cooperation is supporting the enhancement of tertiary education in Namibia with two projects. Besides the JEDS Campus in Ongwediva, funding is also provided to extend the UNAM Campus in Katima Mulilo for the Department of Wildlife Management and Tourism Studies.
