Africa-Press – Namibia. “LET us get the country back to normal life.”

The short but powerful appeal by the Minister of Health and Social Services reflects the mood of most Namibians, fatigued by the impact Covid-19 has had on bodies and minds for the past two years.

According to the minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, the transmission has become widespread in 13 regions, with 596 new positive cases reported in the last 24-hour cycle. The youngest case is a one-year-old child.

The Khomas region reported the highest number, namely 205 and making up 34%, followed by the Kunene region with 83, constituting 14% of all newly-confirmed cases.

“With the number of positive cases constantly increasing, it remains the responsibility of every individual to protect themselves as well as the next person,” Shangula said.

Three Covid-19 deaths were recorded between 12 and 16 December 2021 and one death on 20 December. None of the deceased were vaccinated.

Shangula again urged Namibians to get vaccinated for more people to be protected against Covid-19.

“As we travel for the holidays and celebrate with loved ones, washing hands, keeping a physical distance, and wearing masks should be a priority to keep all safe,” he said.

The country also recorded 31 new re-infections, with Khomas region reporting the highest namely ten cases.

“Among the confirmed cases are 31 learners, 7 teachers, 12 students and 25 healthcare workers from different institutions,” Shangula said.

The number of active cases is 10 643. Hospitalized cases are currently at 252 across 13 regions, of which 16 are in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Six of the hospitalized cases have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 26 are fully vaccinated.

Two cases in ICUs are fully vaccinated.

In total, 337 785 people have completed the vaccination, translating to 22.5% of the target population, while 2 866 people have received a third dose of the vaccine.
