Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), in partnership with various stakeholders, is organizing a series of activities to commemorate National Disability Day and foster a more inclusive society in Namibia.

While National Disability Day was celebrated on 10 June, GIZ revealed that it has developed several activities that will span the coming weeks surrounding the day. According to GIZ, the aim of the activities is to raise awareness among the public and specific stakeholders about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities.

GIZ said that it has developed these activities in collaboration with stakeholders and advocates who are fighting for the representation of persons with disabilities in Namibia.

“Promoting disability rights and inclusion in Namibia are essential and speak directly to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 4, which focuses on quality education, and Goal 10, which aims to reduce inequalities. By collaborating with government institutions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, the stakeholders can ensure that the Leave No One Behind is not just a principle but becomes a reality,” GIZ said.

GIZ revealed that, together with its stakeholders, it has organized a half-day workshop on disability sensitization in July. This workshop, as explained by GIZ, will provide a platform for stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, civil society, and private entities, to enhance their understanding of disability-related issues and collaborate on the development of inclusive practices.

“We believe that true progress lies in promoting an inclusive society that embraces diversity and empowers individuals with disabilities,” Dr. John Steytler, the Technical advisor of GIZ Namibia, said.

“Through these activities on National Disability Day, we aim to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and develop a collective commitment to inclusivity across Namibia,” Steytler added.
