Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Education has confirmed the establishment of a dedicated task force to explore the possibility of converting certain state-owned Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
This was announced by Dalia Mwiya, the Director of TVET, at the National Vocational Education Workshop held in Otjiwarongo, where she spoke on behalf of the Minister of Edication, Sanet Steenkamp. She noted that the workshop reflects the Ministry’s renewed commitment to inclusivity and the development of both academic and vocational skills.
“A dedicated task force has been appointed to assess the feasibility of transforming some of the state-owned vocational training centres into TVET colleges. This will be an extensive and transformative process for the TVET sector, creating a new, modern crop of training institutions and filling the gap that was created with the elevation of the then Polytechnic of Namibia into a University of Science and Technology,” Mwiya said.
Mwiya emphasised that the proposed transformation aligns with the objectives outlined in the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6). She added that, in addition to upgrading VTCs into TVET colleges, NDP6 also highlights the need to improve industry coordination and collaboration, reform TVET curricula and learning pathways, support ongoing professional development for trainers, and diversify funding sources for infrastructure development.
“As part of the 8th Administration, TVET remains a priority, with a strong focus on transforming the sector from a supply-driven approach to a demand-driven one, and ensuring that TVET responds to current and future skills needs, considering emerging sectors such as oil and gas, green hydrogen, sports, agro-processing, arts, and the creative industries,” Mwiya added.
