Government tractors have been dispatched to different regions for ploughing, and in

the northern areas, the tractors are already at work following the good rains received in recent days.

Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge revealed that his office is fully prepared for the ploughing season, ensuring that local farmers have the support they need to boost food production.

“So far, 18 tractors have been sent to the 11 constituencies in the region, with each area receiving at least two tractors,” the governor revealed.

Iipinge said that his office is also working closely with agricultural service centres to service and release additional tractors, aiming for each constituency to eventually have four.

The governor confirmed that ploughing has already started in many areas.

He encouraged both young and elderly landowners to make use of the government tractors, emphasising that increased local food production will help redirect government resources currently used for drought relief to essential sectors like health, education, and infrastructure. In addition, seed distribution, including the most liked okashana and other varieties is being coordinated through constituency councillors’ offices to make resources easily accessible.

Tractor services are offered at an affordable N$360 per hectare, making it possible for more farmers to participate.

Water security is another priority. Iipinge said that newly constructed dams are storing water for future use and encouraged residents to store water for both domestic consumption and gardening purposes.

Echoing President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s call for Namibians to increase food production and achieve self-sufficiency, Iipinge emphasised that the initiative is a collaborative effort between government, local leaders, and communities. The deployment of tractors and agricultural support is not just about preparing the land, it is sowing the seeds of resilience, prosperity, and hope across Namibia.

Okongo constituency councillor Efraim Shipindo reported that ploughing has also started in his constituency and praised the San community members for actively preparing their fields.

“It is inspiring to see everyone coming together to produce food,” he said.

Shipindo added that the government tractors have also been dispatched in Okongo and that most community members are already making use of them.
