Africa-Press – Namibia. Rehoboth will be turned into a hive of activity this weekend when the inaugural Riaan McNab Hardap Governor’s Cup takes place.
According to tournament administrator Rhuuksie ||Garoeb, the event is set to bring together 36 football teams from across Namibia for a highly anticipated weekend of sport and community engagement.
“The tournament will kick off on Friday with a peaceful march advocating against gender-based violence (GBV), violence against women and children and substance abuse – pressing social issues affecting communities nationwide,” he says.
“The march will commence at Namakari at Rehoboth at 08h00 with local brass bands accompanied by Namibian police traffic officers ensuring safety and order. The procession will conclude at Rehoboth Stadium, where an official programme will follow, emphasising unity, awareness and collective action against these societal challenges,” he adds.
“The challenges of GBV, violence and substance abuse continue to threaten the fabric of Namibian society, particularly impacting women and children. The Hardap Governor’s Cup aims to leverage the power of football and sport as tools for community empowerment, education and change, fostering camaraderie and promoting positive behaviour among the youth and residents alike,” ||Garoeb says.
According to a press release issued by ||Garoeb, participants will compete for a prize pool of N$50 000, sponsored by Oudrewman Betting. The winners will take home N$25 000, gold medals and the coveted floating trophy. Runners-up will receive N$12 500 and silver medals, while the semi-finalists will each receive N$6 250. The draw for the tournament will be held at 19h00 tonight at the Rehoboth Hermanus Van Wyk Hall.
Stalls are available at N$400 for vendors wishing to showcase their goods over the weekend. The main matches will commence at 07h00 on Saturday, with gates opening at 06h00. Two fields will be used to ensure the tournament is completed by Sunday. The entrance fee is N$20 for adults, N$10 for children and N$10 per vehicle.
||Garoeb says the netball category has been cancelled due to low interest, with only two teams registering.
“We sincerely wanted to include netball, but unfortunately, the response was insufficient. Next year, we aim to expand the Hardap Governor’s Cup into a fully-fledged sport festival and call on our corporate partners to support this noble initiative,” he says.
“The Hardap Governor’s Cup promises a weekend of exciting football, community solidarity and social consciousness. We invite all residents, teams in their soccer gear and supporters to participate and stand together against violence and substance abuse,” he adds.
