Health ministry dismisses Covid-Omicron XBB variant presence in Namibia

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Health and Social Services has urged the public to disregard text circulating on social media warning the public about a new and deadlier wave of Covid-19, Covid-Omicron XBB.

In a media statement on Wednesday, the ministry’s executive director Ben Nangombe said the text was not issued by the ministry, unauthentic and sent from an unknown origin.

“The ministry continues to conduct various Covid-19 surveillance activities countrywide to prepare for, detect and respond to a resurgence in Covid-19 cases,” Nangombe said.

According to him, Namibia conducts genomic surveillance in laboratories at the University of Namibia and at the National Institute of Pathology.

“Through genomic surveillance, our scientists are able to track the spread of Covid-19 and monitor changes to the genetic code of SARS-CoV2 which may give rise to new variants,” he said.

Nangombe said the latest report shows that the Omicron variant continues to be the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant driving Covid-19 cases in Namibia.

“In Namibia, although we have detected a low frequency of the sub-variant BA.5, we have not yet detected BQ.1 nor XBB,” Nangombe added.

Nangombe said the Covid-19 situation in the country remains stable and manageable and any changes will be announced using official and authentic channels.
