Africa-Press – Namibia. WIDESPREAD rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds was recorded across large parts of central and southern Namibia over the weekend, bringing much-needed relief to farmers while also causing localised damage in some areas.
Several farming areas west of Leonardville reported significant rainfall. Arnhem, about 20 kilometres west of Leonardville, received 10 mm amid very heavy weather, while Dixie, 30 kilometres west of Leonardville, recorded 24 mm. Geikous and Komana farms, north-west of Leonardville, each received about 22 mm, with farmers expressing gratitude for the rainfall.

In the Aranos district, rainfall was uneven but encouraging in places. Wilheben Farm, about 14 kilometres north-northwest of Aranos, received 6 mm, while Alexandria Farm, roughly 40 kilometres north-northwest of the town, recorded 9 mm. Ganoes, about 55 kilometres south of Aranos, received 3.5 mm overnight, while some parts of the Aranos area reported up to 50 mm by Saturday morning.
The Omitara area also experienced widespread rain, with reports indicating totals ranging between 18 mm and 48 mm from 15 kilometres south to 15 kilometres north-west of the settlement. Omateva Farm, about 15 kilometres east of Omitara, experienced intense thunder and lightning late at night, resulting in a power outage, although no rainfall was recorded at that specific location.
Further north, Ombujomenge Farm, about 10 kilometres west of Wilhelmstal, received 1.5 mm of rain, while Gobabis recorded heavy rainfall overnight into Saturday morning.
Mariental and its surrounding areas experienced some of the most intense weather. About 15 kilometres north of Mariental, up to 55 mm of rain was recorded, accompanied by very strong winds. In Mariental itself, severe weather struck early yesterday, with reports of lightning igniting a palm tree at a neighbouring property. This was followed by steady rain and hail, with rainfall totals reaching around 40 mm by the evening. Video shared from the town showed heavy rain, water-filled streets and thunder in the distance.
Residents travelling between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo also reported rainfall and dramatic cloud formations, while images and videos from across the affected regions highlighted the extent of the storms. Farmers and residents have welcomed the rainfall, particularly in drought-prone areas.
