Africa-Press – Namibia. WINDHOEK-BASED lawyer Norman Tjombe says a criminal prosecution of Mariental farmer Johan Meyer, who is accused of driving over the nine-year-old Hendrina Amupolo, would not provide sufficient justice for the girl’s family.
Hendrina died after Meyer allegedly drove over her at his plot at the Hardap irrigation scheme on the outskirts of Mariental on Sunday.
Meyer was charged with culpable homicide and granted bail of N$3 000 on Tuesday.
Hundreds of Mariental residents held a march at the town on Friday, demanding justice for Hendrina. The community members are disappointed with the handling of the case by the Mariental police and prosecutors at the town’s magistrate court.
Tjombe said the girl’s family would institute a civil case against Meyer, whose alleged negligent driving is claimed to have caused the death of Hendrina.
“There must be compensation for this family for the pain and suffering they are experiencing. Both the criminal prosecution and the civil suit can and will run concurrently,” said Tjombe.
Tjombe said the family would also take legal action against the police investigator and prosecutors involved in the matter, to ensure that the case is properly investigated.
According to a police report, Hendrina, her mother and other family members were collecting beans in Meyer’s field without his consent before he chased after them with his vehicle.
