Africa-Press – Namibia. THE //Kharas chairperson of the Namibia National Teachers’ Union (Nantu) Nelson Damaseb on Friday described the voting days by civil servants as peaceful, and marked by a high turnout.
Damaseb said both Nantu and the Namibia Public Workers Union (Napwu) rolled out 41 polling stations across the region.
He said judging from the voter turnout, they expected more than 60% of eligible voters to have cast their votes by end of voting on Friday.
About 10 000 eligible voters were registered.
“The turnout has been crazy. I have never seen people turning up to vote like that. Not even in national elections. We will see what they voted for on Saturday,” said Damaseb.
Damaseb doubles as the returning officer for the region during the elections.
He cited Oranjemund, Rosh Pinah, Luderitz, Keetmanshoop and Karasburg as having experienced high voter turn out.
Napwu’s //Kharas regional coordinator Cleophas Katuuo echoed the same sentiments, adding that anyone who did not turn up to vote could have been ill or had travelled.
“We received 90 books containing ballots. Fifty of them were finished on Thursday alone, and voting continued on Friday,” said Katuuo.
Counting started once polling stations closed on Friday at 17h00 and some regions had already completed vote counting by 17h00 on Saturday.
