Africa-Press – Namibia. HUNDREDS of young people flocked to the Eenhana State Hospital to get their Covid-19 vaccinations, which is a requirement for recruitment into the Namibian Defence Force (NDF).

Speaking to The Namibian on Monday, a hospital staff member said young people had been at the facility since early in the morning.

“When we came to work this morning, the hospital was already filled to capacity. Maybe they are afraid the vaccine will run out and they won’t get a chance to get their shots.”

Paulus Shihafeleni (22) travelled from Ondobe, a town outside Eenhana, to get vaccinated.

“I came to get my shot only because I need employment. I couldn’t get vaccinated before because I was scared due to vaccine conspiracy theories. Now I have no choice, I need work,” said Shihafeleni.

Twenty-one-year-old Selma Festus travelled from Oshaango village.

“I came as early as possible because I don’t want to be left out of the recruitment, in case the vaccines run out. I am only getting vaccinated because I want a job in the NDF,” said Festus.

This week, the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs announced the recruitment of Namibians between the ages of 18 and 25 before 31 July 2022.

Applicants must be ready to undergo medical tests, which includes an HIV/AIDS test, must have a Grade 12 certificate, and should be able to run 2,4 km in 14 minutes and 30 seconds (women).
