Africa-Press – Namibia. DEPUTY minister of finance Maureen Hinda said she never made romantic advances towards the Affirmative Repositioning leader, Job Amupanda, and she is now suing him for N$1 million.

Hinda was responding to Amupanda’s claims that when he was part of the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL), Hinda would invite him for lunch. He said she seemingly brought a court case against him because she was bitter that he rejected her advances.

Hinda is suing Amupanda over a social media post, which she said was made with the intention to defame her. Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Hinda said she was never close to Amupanda and that there was no way she would make advances towards him.

“I couldn’t do advances to him. He is a small boy,” she said. She refused to comment further, saying the matter is before the court.

In July 2021, Amupanda posted a picture of a woman on his Facebook page and captioned it “deputy minister of finance Maureen Hinda during the liberation struggle. Maureen was so WizWiz. It’s like she won’t think twice about taking out a knife”.

Hinda asserts that the post conveyed and was understood by the public to mean that the pictured woman was her in her younger days. She added that it created the impression that she was a “street girl ready to fight and that she being a Damara would not hesitate to stab anyone”.

She said the picture depicted her as an uncouth woman with loose moral values during the liberation struggle, and also that she is not a law-abiding citizen. Hinda alleged that Amupanda defamed her reputation and she suffered damages amounting to N$800 000, therefore she wants to be paid N$1 million.

Amupanda said yesterday that when he was in SPYL, Hinda invited him to Pan Afrikan Centre of Namibia events to make presentations, and that she also wanted him to help her with her kitchen business in the south.

“It’s a common occurrence, Swapo politicians bring a defamation case in order for them to be applauded by their superiors,” he said. Amupanda added that he is not surprised that Hinda brought a court application against him because “the tallest tree catches the highest wind”.
