Iipumbu calls for unity, improved service delivery

Africa-Press – Namibia. Safety and immigration minister Lucia Iipumbu yesterday urged staff members to support the newly-appointed deputy minister Edward Wambo as the ministry pushes to improve service delivery and strengthen national security. Welcoming Wambo at the ministry’s headquarters in Windhoek, Iipumbu said his appointment comes at a critical time when the ministry is facing growing challenges such as cross-border crime, migration pressures and the urgent need for digital transformation.

The appointment, made by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah earlier this month, is expected to reinforce the ministry’s leadership as it works to safeguard Namibia’s sovereignty while delivering efficient and people-centred services. Iipumbu described Wambo’s appointment as a moment of renewal and an opportunity to strengthen the ministry’s work in safeguarding the country’s security, identity and internal peace. “I am convinced that our partnership will be one of trust and transformation,” she said. She highlighted the ministry’s wide responsibilities, including managing the national population register, controlling immigration, maintaining law and order through the police, and overseeing correctional services.

The minister pointed to key challenges facing the ministry, such as growing transnational crime, increasing migration, urbanisation and the need to modernise systems through technology. However, she said these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and stronger cooperation between departments. “Open your doors, share your knowledge and work together as one team,” she urged. She stressed the importance of unity within the ministry, saying teamwork would be critical in achieving its goals of improved service delivery and a people-centred approach. In his remarks, Wambo expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to serve with integrity and dedication.

“I stand before you with humility and a deep sense of responsibility,” he remarked. He said he was ready to work closely with the team and contribute to strengthening the ministry’s mandate. The deputy minister outlined his key priorities, which include improving internal security, supporting migrants, maintaining law and order, and ensuring humane treatment and rehabilitation of offenders. “I am committed to strengthening these important areas as we serve our nation,” he said. Wambo noted that the ministry already has a strong foundation and said he aims to build on existing achievements while introducing new ideas. He highlighted the ministry’s long-term vision to develop a globally recognised population register and effective migration management system. According to him, this vision aligns with Namibia’s national development goals, including Vision 2030. “We are part of a generation that must carry this ministry forward and ensure that we meet our national targets,” he said. Wambo further pledged to support Iipumbu’s leadership and work within his role to drive transformation and innovation.

“I see myself as a champion of solutions that will move this ministry forward,” he added. He called on staff members to work together in unity and professionalism, stressing the need for efficient, accessible and people-centred services. [email protected]
