Africa-Press – Namibia. HIS Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, joins Namibians and the rest of the world in honouring International Nurses Day on May 12, 2023, under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future.”
Geingob emphasized that the vital roles of nurses, along with their selfless commitment and sacrifices, must be recognized. While the world acknowledges the significant work of nurses in maintaining healthy societies, the Namibian Government is aware of the evolving nature of the nursing profession.
“Today, as we mark International Nurses Day, we recognize the extraordinary contributions of Namibian nurses in our healthcare system and the well-being of our nation. Celebrated under the theme ‘Our Nurses. Our Future,’ this year’s theme appropriately recognizes the needs and investments required for nursing to address global health issues and ensure a healthy future for all. Indeed, nurses remain critical to keeping households and communities healthy, providing essential support and care,” Geingob said.
According to the head of state, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the significance of nurses as frontline champions in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services.
He further said that Namibian nurses continue to make substantial contributions to ensure access to healthcare for all. Therefore, the government acknowledges the various challenges faced by nurses in fulfilling their mandate and is committed to creating an enabling and supportive environment.
“We owe our health and future to the tireless commitment of nurses, whose continuous impact on our lives is immeasurable. On this occasion, I express my deepest gratitude to all our nurses for their dedication, compassion, sacrifices, and unwavering efforts in keeping our communities and nation healthy. Your commitment to providing quality healthcare services, sometimes at your own expense, is inspiring and truly commendable. Happy International Nurses Day,” Geingob concluded.
International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the pioneer of modern nursing. The day honours nurses for their contributions to healthcare and raises awareness of their critical roles in promoting people’s health and well-being.
