Independent Football League Expected for 2026/27 Season

Africa-Press – Namibia. The envisaged autonomous football league could be realised during the 2026/27 season, based on the outcome of a meeting between the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and club representatives.

Talking to Desert FM recently, NFA spokesperson Isack Hamata said: “There is an urgency being played on the independence of the Namibia Premier Football League.”

“Discussions took place and the briefing that I received from my principal is that there is an urgency to support and get things in order to ensure that we get a fully fledged independent and autonomous football league.”

On the five-member committee, Hamata said the committee’s main task is to look at everything that is needed for the league to be moved out of the NFA and out of the association’s model.

“As an independent autonomous league, issues like the framework policy, regulation and the constitution, all those things must be studied and at the appropriate time the committee will come back to the table and to the rest of the NFA’s members and say this is what we have come up with and this is our recommendation.”

“For instance they can say, ‘we are ready to move within the coming season. We need X amount of money, we have the money or need to approve a committee of some sort’.”

“All of those things and what is being preempted will then be put to the table and the members and the 16 clubs will discuss it and once they have the approval they will bring that to the NFA and another discussion will take place to see what are the possibilities, what can happen and what cannot happen,” Hamata said.

He said the transition to an independent, autonomous league would happen within the specified time, provided everyone agrees and the committee’s findings and recommendations are followed.

The general perception of what transpired at the meeting held on 26 July, is that the current model must continue in the 2025/26 football season. “Because there is little time between now and the league must kick off between August and September.”
