International Nurses Day marked in Omusati and Oshana

Africa-Press – Namibia. TODAY, nurses all across the world are honoured for their selfless dedication despite the highs and lows they have experienced.

The day serves as a reminder of the crucial role that nurses, alongside doctors, play in the healthcare sector.

The day emphasizes the importance of treating nurses with equal respect everywhere and encourages people to show their appreciation for these brave and hardworking professionals.

The Oshana and Omusati Regional Health Directorates celebrate the occasion at various designated areas.

Omusati Health Director Alfons Amoomo said the day is observed to honour nurses as an invaluable resource and to raise awareness of the challenges they face, as well as to commemorate the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Amoomo made these remarks on Friday during the commemoration of International Nurses Day held in the region.

Similarly, Amoomo expressed sincere appreciation and celebration for all nurses’ vital work in the Omusati Region, thanking them for their contribution to quality healthcare services and unwavering dedication in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He then encouraged young nurses to learn from the experiences and wisdom of their senior nurses and apply them in their daily lives.

“We need to learn from the lessons of the pandemic and translate them into actions for the future that ensure nurses are protected, respected, and valued,” he said.

He added that it is now time to look to the future and demonstrate what these investments will mean for nursing and healthcare.

Amoomo stated that their future depends on every nurse, every voice, not only being on the front lines of care but also on the front lines of change.

In Oshana, nursing students from the University of Namibia (UNAM) Oshakati campus kicked off the celebrations in the early hours, holding various presentations to remind themselves of nursing ethics and professional standards.

The day concluded at the Oshakati Hospital, where nurses joined the rest of the world in celebrating the day.

Oshakati Medical Superintendent Ruben Kanime said this is a day when they pause and acknowledge the significant contributions that nurses make to society.

Kanime expressed appreciation for the great contributions nurses are making to Namibia’s healthcare system.
