Africa-Press – Namibia. The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) on Wednesday evening announced it has officially handed over the operations of the new container terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay to Terminal Investment Namibia (TiN).

This is effective from 1 October.

The handover marks the beginning of a 25-year concession.

“The concession allows us to attract private capital to invest in crucial upgrades, including dredging the entrance channel and acquiring new equipment,” said Namport chief executive Andrew Kanime.

He said the partnership will ensure Namport stays competitive and contribute to Namibia’s vision of becoming a logistics hub.

TiN, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) and a partner of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), will manage and expand the terminal facilities.

The terminal, commissioned in 2019, has a capacity of 750 000 containers annually.

“TiN is committed to bringing innovative practices and advanced operational standards to Namibia,” said TiN chief executive Alexander Reali.

The handover also includes plans for immediate dredging activities to deepen the port’s channel to accommodate larger vessels.

A formal ceremony will be held to share further details of the concession.
