Kandorozu Flags Rise in Mining Employee Outsourcing

Africa-Press – Namibia. National Unity Democratic Organisation parliamentarian Vetaruhe Kandorozu has raised concerns surrounding the increase of mines outsourcing employees to contractors to cut costs.

He raised this issue in the National Assembly on Wednesday during a notice of questions directed to minister of justice and labour relations Wise Immanuel.

The minister is expected to respond on 9 October.

Kandorozu said this practice leads to the erosion of permanent jobs, reduces workers rights and leads to the decline of permanent job security, as highlighted recently by the Mineworkers Union of Namibia.

“This happened at Rössing Uranium, and it seems Husab mine is planning to do the same thing. The government needs to address this growing issue. Imagine if someone’s basic salary was N$17 000 after it is handed over to the contractor they will be getting N$10 000,” he added.

He said this negatively affects employees and they end up losing properties such as houses because they can no longer afford it.
