Africa-Press – Namibia. Defence and veterans’ affairs minister, Frans Kapofi, says some people asked him to recruit them into the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) when his ministry invited those willing to enlist in the army to apply for the job.
Defence and veterans’ affairs minister, Frans Kapofi, says some people asked him to recruit them into the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) when his ministry invited those willing to enlist in the army to apply for the job.
Speaking during a meeting with traditional leaders at Eenhana last week, Kapofi said some people sent him names asking that the names be considered for the job.
“I am seeing people sending names to me saying this one please. Yes, you are right because you want somebody to be employed but the person must be fit to be able to do the job.
“I know many of you were very unhappy when the NDF put up conditions, like the age limit from 18 to 25, academic aspects and health and all those things…and of course the Covid test results. When we say people must be tested, you were very angry but we also have your support we know,” he said.
The minister said the requirements are not set to prevent anyone from qualifying but the NDF needs people who are fit and can withstand the hardships in the ocean as some soldiers will work in the sea. According to him, it is not easy for someone who is not fit to go to sea or to be paratroopers.
“You need people who are fit to do that…but to get in the defence structures is not just to be employed. It’s not just about employment. It’s a career that has a lot of risks and I appeal to our traditional leaders to understand some of these things. I know you understand,” he said.
Asked how many requests he had received, Kapofi said: “I think my audience understood me well and I see no need to clarify it further.”
