Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Oshikoto Governor, Sacky Kathindi, called for the Road Construction Company (RCC) contractors to work closely with nearby community vendors to prevent any tension which might hinder completion of the Engoyi-Omuntele road project.
Kathindi made the call during an inspection of the Engoyi to Omuntele road construction site on Wednesday.
The project was awarded to RCC in November 2023 and was supposed to be completed in June 2024, but they failed to do so.
Construction is still ongoing.
Kathindi’s call for collaboration comes as the Road Contractor Company Limited (RCC) continues its work on upgrading the road to a low-volume seal standard.
“As the contractor, you should work together with nearby community vendors to avoid any tension,” he said.
He added that they don’t want people being pushed away in the name of development, but rather want to find a solution.
RCC Project Manager Leevi Kakukuru said that they are currently facing significant challenges due to equipment theft by community members.
According to Kakukuru, solar panels have been stolen from amber flashing lights, which are crucial for warning motorists of hazards ahead.
“This is very dangerous and can cause accidents because the lights are meant to warn motorists during the night of the hazard ahead,” he said.
In addition to the thefts, Kakukuru cautioned community members against placing stones on the opened sections of the road.
He stressed that these stones are a hazard to motorists and community members as well and can cause serious injury.
Meanwhile, Omuntele Councillor Sacky Nangula has urged the RCC and Roads Authority to listen to the community and sit down with business owners to avoid tension and to reach an agreement on the removal of their businesses.
He stressed that community engagement is the best solution, rather than neglecting the affected people.
